Everything in our lives has changed, and it’s happened so quickly. Do you still remember the icons that describe your era? I especially love it when people try to remember the past, and they summarize it by piecing together events, music, artists, and trends from when they were growing up. Once in our office, we were discussing the things we had when we were growing up. It was funny that those in the younger generation could not relate to what we were talking about.
I grew up and survived high school and college without the internet or the benefit of having an iPhone. I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to actually drink water from the faucet when I was young. Bottled water was unheard of when I was growing up. If you wanted to write someone a letter, you had to mail it via snail mail and use a stamp. There was no cable either. Mix tapes were the only way we could enjoy customized music on the go. Even the way we consumed media was different. We got our news by watching television or reading the newspaper. I find it fascinating when I speak with my young cousins and friends. They view life and their experiences so differently.
The infographic below was created by students from eCampus Blog, and it illustrates how they view life. Every year, Beloit College publishes the Mindset List which allows their teachers to grasp what the current culture is for their students. One thing that was not mentioned on here though is the fact that people communicate differently now too. It would have been more interesting to see how many young people rely on their smartphones, the social networking platforms and the technology that to them seems like it has been there forever. And it would have also been great to see what the students are studying or the number of students taking courses that are web-related. If an infographic like this was made for you and your life, what do you think it would it look like?
