The problem with staying in a hotel or hostel is that they look so samey. It doesn’t matter if you’re staying in New York or Paris – the rooms tend to be beige and uninspiring. Hardly somewhere you’ll remember for years to come. Which is exactly why you need to stay somewhere more adventurous on your next holiday, like one of these ten truly bizarre accommodations and places across the world.
If you were told to think of the most bizarre place you could spend the night, it’s highly doubtful that anyone would even suggest a sewage pipe. After-all who would want to stay in a sewage pipe? Yet, if you visit Austria anytime soon, you can indeed sleep in your very own sewage pipe, fitted with a cozy double bed and electric doors. Perfect for budget travellers, you simply pay what you want the next morning as there is no set charge. Definitely one of the more bizarre places you can stay at, don’t you think?
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sleep deep underground? Well, how about 155m below ground in a mine speckled in silver – sounds pretty special doesn’t it? On your trip into one of Sweden’s oldest mines, you’ll be given a tour before being taken down to your room and gifted with a food basket to picnic on overnight. Remember to wear warm clothes, though, as the mine can get chilly overnight.
If you grew up with your own pet hamster, you probably wondered what it would be like to have your own giant wheel to run in. Well, your dreams may have just come true, with this hamster cage-themed apartment set right in the heart of Nantes. Tiny in nature, the apartment is made to feel exactly like a cramped cage – there’s even a human wheel to run on! A definite must-visit on your list of places to travel to.
With Game of Thrones, filled with its medieval castles and royal wars, being so popular right now, it makes you wonder what it would be like to sleep in your very own castle for a night. Of course, most of us think a castle would be out of our budget, however, French regions like Dordogne have over 1000 castles in the area – from full castles to apartments, there are plenty of medieval castle rentals on offer to make your royal fantasies come true.
Never has the term “sleep with the fishes” seemed so apt than with Zanzibar’s Floating Hotel. Armed with three levels, the first floats on the water allowing you to soak up all the gorgeous sun with 360-degree views. Then go downstairs to find a double bed surrounded by glass, so you can relax and watch all the fantastic underwater life.
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a prisoner in jail, just without committing any crimes? In Latvia, there is an ex-prison, described as being more impressive than Alcatraz, which has been converted into a hotel. Not for the faint-hearted, you can even opt to take part in one of the hotel’s theatre nights, where you will be treated like a real prisoner.
There is something incredibly romantic about the idea of sleeping in a hotel that is completely made out of ice – kind of like something straight out of a fantasy novel. The Ice Hotel in Sweden makes for a surreal and memorable experience, with cold rooms coming with their own snow suits and reindeer skins to keep you warm in a room that averages -5 degrees Celsius during the night. Why always travel to warm places when you can experience something like this.
The Cave Hotel in Cappadocia is filled with rooms that have been carved into the side of a cliff in an ancient valley, making incredible cave rooms. These rooms are of the utmost luxury, mixing opulent beds and furniture with the bare walls of a cave, making for a unique experience. There is also an amazing pool that has been based on ancient Roman baths.
Based in a surfing community in Den Haag, is a group of pods designed to let you experience what it would be like to live in a post-apocalyptic world. With various survival pods available, you can choose to have a basic pod with few amenities, or go all out with the luxury pod, which has been decorated in 1970’s fashion. This includes its own disco ball, psychedelic colours and classic James Bond movies to watch.
Sleeping underwater always feels alluring – most likely because it seems so alien and impossible. Which is why the Floating Underwater Hotel in Stockholm feels so special. Designed by local artist Mikael Genberg, the room has two levels. The upper is above water and has its own kitchen and toilet, although there is no electricity. There’s also a rubber dingy if you want to explore the waters. Downstairs the glass walls give you panoramic views of the water, making for a memorable stay. Add this to your bucket list of places to visit.
