Hemp Extract vs. CBD Oil

If you haven’t heard of CBD oil by this point, where have you been? Unheard of only a few years, CBD oil is now one of the fastest-growing consumer products in the country and has already ballooned into a multibillion-dollar national industry.

It’s great that many are enjoying the benefits of CBD oil, but what isn’t great is the lack of information in all those products. How does CBD oil work? What is hemp oil? What is hemp extract? Is one product legal and the other not?

There are many questions with the burgeoning CBD industry, but one of the most common is simple terminology, like hemp extract vs. CBD oil. Everyone needs to know what they’re buying, so we’ve outlined how to tell the difference between products like hemp extract, CBD oil, and what they mean to the consumer.

What Is Hemp Extract?

If you’re looking to buy CBD oil, you’ll see many mentions of hemp. The only CBD products that are legal in all 50 states are CBD oil products produced, or extracted, from industrial hemp and contain less than 0.3 THC.

As the name implies, hemp extract is CBD oil extracted from the industrial hemp variety of the cannabis sativa plant. Under the 2014 and 2018 U.S. Farm Bills, hemp extract is legal in all 50 states if it meets the federal THC threshold.

What Is CBD Oil?

Though the term CBD oil means different things to different people, there’s only one true definition – the combination of CBD and carrier oil. CBD oil can be derived from hemp and non-hemp sources, can be organic, can contain THC, might be full or broad spectrum, but regardless, it’s CBD and oil.

CBD oil is a broad term, while hemp extract means the CBD oil only came from industrial hemp. Like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares – all hemp extract is CBD oil, but not all CBD oil is hemp extract.

What Is Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil is different than both CBD oil and hemp extract. Both CBD oil and hemp extract use most of the cannabis plant, but hemp seed oil is produced from hemp seeds only. Hemp seed oil may have many benefits, but because the whole plant isn’t being used, especially the potentially beneficial cannabinoids, you won’t get the same benefits as hemp extract or CBD oil. Hemp seed oil is most commonly found in beauty and skincare products.

Figuring Out CBD Oil And Hemp Extract

All the new CBD products and their terminology can be confusing, but it’s important to know the difference between hemp extract, CBD oil, and other terms like hemp seed oil. Only purchase your CBD oil at a reputable provider and ask questions if you’re still confused with other terms. CBD oil may have many benefits – but only if you know what you’re buying.
