How To Get Fit With My Dog – Here Are The Tips

A lot of research shows that a third of the people in the world, especially those living in the United States, are overweight. Moreover, the same case has also been reported for dogs and cats. About 60% of both dogs and cats are overweight and often die as a result of these health problems.

Whether it is a human being or an animal, being obese can lead to cardiovascular diseases and even cancer. As for people, they can start by jogging or visiting the gym. However, if you decide to involve your dog in the keep-fit process, you ought to consult your veterinarian first. This is because specific exercises such as running are not recommended for the puppies as their bones are yet to develop.

However, if you are still confused about the best exercises that you can engage your dog in order to keep fit, here are a few tips for you.

1. Swimming

Before you throw your dog in the swimming pool, remember that not all dogs like water. Moreover, not all of them can comfortably swim. However, if you are lucky to have a dog who enjoys spending his time in the water, swimming is just the perfect exercise for you.

All you need to do is to have a safety vest for him, thus giving you the confidence to leave him in the water unattended safely.

2. Take A Hike

If you are both new to hiking, you should start with small treks in the neighborhood. All you need to do is to pack up enough water and some snacks to keep you going for a few hours.

During this hike, ensure that your dog is given frequent water breaks as well as kept on a leash to prevent him from wandering into unknown surroundings. If it is a hot sunny day, ensure that his paws are protected well.

3. Dog Yoga

Yoga for dogs is a new trend that many dog owners are beginning to embrace. You can get your dog involved by teaching him a few stretches or teaching him how to stand on his hind feet. Moreover, you can have him standing on you as it keeps you motivated in doing the stretches.

4. Cut Back On The Treats

We have all seen and heard that you can reward your dog by giving him ample treats. However, this trend ought to change by having attention in place of treats. If you truly have to give your dog some treats, make it half the potion. The whole point is to reduce the intake of junk in your body.

5. Tug-Of-War

Dogs are super playful. Play tug-of-war with him at least once per week. This is helpful to your upper body as it adds to the muscles. Moreover, your dog benefits more as he gets extra time to interact with you.

6. Play Catch

Here, you can get his favorite toy or a ball. Go out in the field and play a game of catch until you are both exhausted. Unfortunately, the paws get dirty at the end of the play, and the need to use the best dog clippers for Shih Tzu arises at this moment.

7. Jog

Once you get an environment that is favorable for dogs, get comfortable shoes to start your early or evening jogs. The run is suitable for your cardio workout. However, ensure that he is on a leash while you give him lots of water to keep him hydrated.

8. Resistance Walk

This is challenging your dog to walk in all kinds of weather. For example, you can walk him in the snow, shallow waters, or leaf-filled roads. The extra effort applied while walking in these severe conditions will be the right way of exercising for him.

Sign Up For Exercise Class

In some instances, being disciplined may not work out for many people. This is because a lot of effort is required to remain consistent in one form of activity. However, you can overcome this challenge by enrolling you and your dog for agility classes. These are standard classes that are designed for humans and pets as well.

Getting fit is necessary for all humans and animals. However, discipline and patience must be inculcated in most of these activities. The above exercises are some of the many tricks that can be applied when keeping fit with your dog.
