If you are a woman, at some point in your life, you have most likely looked at yourself in the mirror and instead of smiling and being happy, you poked and prodded at your body with a crinkled nose, unhappy with what you saw. Why are we like that? Why do we do that to ourselves? I have no idea. I do it to myself all the time. I know I’m not considered fat, but I still look at my ass and wish it was smaller and jiggle the skin under my arms with disgust.
When I wrote the article Curvy Women Are Beautiful, it spawned tons of comments from men and women about how twisted our self images can be. People say that as we get older, we stop caring about that kind of stuff. I hope that is true, but I still think about it everyday.
Marie Claire magazine recently asked several design agencies to design posters that would challenge our minds when it comes to what we consider the perfect body. Think about it, what is the perfect body anyway? Who decided that? The result of their request manifested in these very thought-provoking illustrations. My favorite one is about how the people who truly love us don’t want us to change anything. Perhaps we could learn to love ourselves like those who love us do. If you would like to join the Twitter conversation about this, just follow the hashtag #MCLoveMyBody.
