As you know if you follow me, I’m on Twitter everyday. I love Twitter, I love my friends on Twitter, and I write about Twitter often. Twitter is a huge part of my life, it is my happy place, and it’s full of positive people who send positive tweets. I’m sure some people might disagree with me about that, but just remember that each person’s Twitter experience is different.
Even though I have over 36,000 followers (of which I’ve followed 33,000 back – by hand), I have never gotten into an argument or problem in the stream. Sometimes people ask me how that is possible and why that is. I want you to know that I get my fair share of “nasty tweets” from people.
You just don’t know it because I don’t engage with those particular people on Twitter, so they never show up on my page. I share the same philosophy as @Jason_Pollock. Last week he tweeted, “TWITTER TIP: When haters send you tweets trying to bait you into responding to them, the best you can do is IGNORE THEM.” That is exactly what I do, and those people eventually go away, and usually pretty quickly. If I have to, I will block them, but I’m not a big fan of blocking, and I do that only in extreme cases.
I believe there are many benefits to being positive on Twitter, and I believe it so much so that I’ve made a list of the ways you, me, and everyone else can benefit individually from sending positive tweets each day. I hope you enjoy reading this, and most of all, I hope it makes you smile.
1. Better Twitter Relationships
To me, this is the number one reason to be positive on Twitter. You will experience deeper, richer, more genuine Twitter friendships when people see you are a positive person on the site. What some people still don’t understand is that there is no separation in the laws of nature whether you are online or offline. If you are positive online, you will attract positive followers, just like offline you will attract more positive friends. Having better Twitter relationships will enrich your life tremendously, which will bring you more happiness. When you are happier, you will feel better about yourself. When you feel better about yourself, you’ll have a better life. It’s all part of a continuous circle, and it all stems from being an optimist and from being positive.
2. More Creativity and Inspiration
There are a lot of creative people on Twitter who spread inspiration to their followers. Twitter is a place where I am always inspired. When we feel good, we want to do good. When we want to do good things, we can find creativity and inspiration everywhere around us. You have an opportunity to give back on Twitter. Send positive tweets and inspire others. It will come back to you ten fold. According to The Happiness Show, people who are positive have greater creativity, increased productivity, a higher quality of work and a higher income level. If that’s not a handful of good reasons to be positive on Twitter, I don’t know what is.
3. Position Yourself As A Leader
If you are trying to position yourself as a leader within social media, one of the first things you’ll learn is to be positive. Have you ever seen a well-respected Twitter leader get into an argument in the stream? Nope, and you probably never will. Those that are true leaders don’t engage people on that level offline, and they certainly don’t online. They understand that within 4 seconds of sending a tweet, it becomes public information forever. Sure, you can delete tweets from your Twitter page, and it may not show up in Twitter search anymore, but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there somewhere. That petty argument is now part of your online persona. You will never be able to accurately gauge how many people witnessed your interaction. Just like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, what happens on the Internet stays on the Internet. You are constantly leaving a digital footprint. It’s definitely something to remember if you are trying to build a reputation for yourself. This reminds me of the saying, “Eagles don’t flock, they soar.”
4. More Gratitude and Appreciation
Those that are in touch with their own energy know that the feeling of gratitude is the highest frequency possible. You will attract more into your life by living with an “attitude of gratitude” than anything else. There is a lot of love and gratitude on Twitter. There are tons of smiles, hugs and xoxos that are shared every day in tweets. I remember reading about a study a few years ago which showed that when athletes feel a feeling of gratitude before a run, they can actually run faster. It’s energy like no other. Get in on the love, send your own positive tweets, and notice a change in your own life. By being genuinely positive on Twitter, you will open the door for greater achievements for yourself.
5. Better Health
I can tell you from experience, when I’m having a stressful day, I can get a tweet from @LoriMoreno, @Iconic88, @SuuperG, or any one of my many other Twitter friends who are positive, and I can instantly feel the stress melt off my body. My shoulders relax, I smile bigger, and I feel better. It is a known fact that people with less stress get sick less, they are less sensitive to problems and pain, and they live longer. If nothing else, be positive and follow positive people on Twitter for your own physical and emotional health. You can read this article about the health benefits of being positive. It’s fascinating stuff.
6. Better Overall Twitter Experience
We deal with so much negativity every day it seems like. Whether we are reading something on the Internet, watching the news, listening to the radio, whatever, there’s always crazy stuff going on in the world, and there probably always will be. By being positive on Twitter, you will enhance your whole overall Twitter experience. You will feel energized and excited to log in every day. How do you think Twitter addicts became Twitter addicts in the first place? It’s because they saw the value and shared the love. Once you get in that space, you don’t want to leave. I always say that if everyone in “real life” was as nice as everyone on Twitter, the world would be a better place. You have the ability to create your own sunshine on Twitter. Try it for yourself!
