6 Incredible & Creative Custom Made Prosthetic Limbs

In our attempt to uncover new technologies here on Bit Rebels, I wanted to take a look at something that might not be that obvious when we talk about technology. There are a lot of people around the world that have lost a limb either to some horrible accident, injury or they were just not born with them. Designer Sophie de Oliveira Barata specializes in helping these people put some flair into their lives with the help of custom created prosthetic limbs.

Her work is both eye-catching as well as beautiful, and it provokes a thought in your head that you haven’t had before. Technology does not have to be confined to consumer gadgets and devices, technology is everywhere! Sophie makes that very clear in her pictures of the people that she has helped “pimp” out their prosthetics to beautiful works of art. It’s amazing to see the commitment that has gone into creating these one-offs which I am sure grabs the attention wherever these people go.

These prosthetic limbs are of course not meant to be worn every day, they are more meant to be an accessory in these people’s lives. It’s like a beautiful watch that you only want to wear on special occasions.

Sophie not only creates these mind-blowing and artful prosthetics, she also creates realistic and natural looking limbs to make their augmented add-on into a seamless fit. In her own words, she expresses an in-depth understanding for how these people look upon themselves and that they too have their own need to claim awesomeness in their lives.

Having an alternative limb is about claiming control and saying ‘I’m an individual and this reflects who I am.”

I think it is safe to say that every single one of her custom made prosthetic limbs are extravagant in their own way, and share a story of individuality and rebellion in a way most of us can’t express. No doubt these are works of art that need to be seen.
