DIY Cell Phone Includes All Core Features Of An Early Mobile Phone

I am sure most of you who have a smartphone have once or twice wished that you could develop your own smartphone with your own features, right? It’s a dream that many people share. Unfortunately, we are still some time away from that, but if you have a little technical know-how, you could create your own cell phone. This article is all about a guy who created his own DIY cell phone with the help of an Arduino computer and some technical skills.

The mastermind behind this almost Tony Stark-like creation is Instructables member Ye Xiaobo’s whose technical know-how seems to know no boundaries. If I had the technical skills this guy has, I sure would make myself some pretty cool stuff, I can tell you that for certain. I guess Ye got sick of all the pre-installed and native features that truck loads of smartphones have, so he decided to create his own.

This DIY cell phone is, as I said, based on an Arduino Uno, a 2.8 inch TFT Touch Shield screen, a GPRS Shield to GSM and GPRS networks, a rechargeable Li-ion battery and a 3D printed case to house it all. The creation in itself is nothing but masterfully packaged. Once you see it run, you can really tell that even though it seems like an easy endeavor to put together your very own DIY cell phone these days, it’s actually harder than you think to connect to networks and make the “applications” run fast and smooth.

If you’re looking to become a modern day Tony Stark, you can just pop over to Seeed and look at the complete list of parts for this DIY cell phone, and then get to work. One thing you should probably remember though is that the parts for this phone alone will set you back a geeky $173.10. As you can see, creating your very own smartphone isn’t exactly the cheapest endeavor you can undertake. You could probably just buy a feature-loaded smartphone for that kind of money these days. But, some people like to take complete control over their gadgets, and this is surely the way to do that.
