I never thought a Pez dispenser article would fall into the category of technology, but this definitely does. Surely you remember eating Pez candy when you were young. The little candies get loaded into the dispenser, and when you pull the head back, the candy pops out. It was one of my favorites when I was a kid. How would you like to have a Pez dispenser featuring your own head on top? It could be the most personalized candy dispenser ever.
A 3D printing jewelry company called Hop Pop Factory is responsible for this geeky deliciousness. The process isn’t all that hard, or so it seems. They simply pop the tops off some ordinary Pez dispensers and put your head on there as a replacement. They create 3D printed versions of human heads via an Xbox Kinect.
Unfortunately, I don’t think these are actually for sale now, but they should be! Hop Pop Factory created 32 personalized Pez dispensers for a company to give its employees. Each person got a Pez dispenser that looked like him or herself. These are so much better than the dorky cartoon character Pez dispensers. That must have been the most awesome corporate gift ever.
This is the first time in a while that I’ve heard of an Xbox Kinect being used for something cool. The motion-sensor in the Kinect can scan a person’s head and then the company used a regular 3D printer to print each one. Since each personalized Pez dispenser is made out of plastic, they could be a forever keepsake. I hope the company starts selling these. We could all take a scan of our own heads with our Kinects and then send them the scan to make our Pez. I know…wishful thinking!
