Solar Powered Smartphone Charging Stations In NYC Parks Starting Today

New Yorkers are typically away from home during the day, and far away from their smartphone chargers. Anyone who lives in a big city like NYC understands the importance of being able to charge on the go. With all the innovative mobile charging solutions we’ve seen introduced over the past few years, you’d think mobile charging wouldn’t be a big deal, but it is still a challenge for a lot of people. AT&T and Goal Zero hope to change that with these solar powered charging stations.

Beginning today, these solar powered smartphone charging stations will be put in public NYC parks. Anyone who needs a quick charge will be able to stop by and plug in for a few minutes. Right now they are only scheduled to be setup until September. However, if they are successful (which you know they will be), they will be setup in permanent locations around NYC.

Each one of these charging stations has three 15-watt solar panels and a 168 watt-hour battery. That means each one of these charging stations will be able to charge six devices for several days (at any given time). And, it doesn’t even have to be sunny outside for that. They will work at nighttime or even when it’s cloudy.

You can watch the video below to get more details about it. I’m sure this will be such a welcomed service offered in NYC. Just think about how valuable it will be during emergency situations when people desperately need to charge their smartphones to get in touch with friends and loved ones. This will undoubtedly relieve a lot of stress for a lot of people. What a great idea! I’m sure these charging stations will be a huge success.
