Technology: A Parking Spot Locator for Your iPhone!

Wow, for people who live in a big city, like me, finding this app is like winning the lottery. Ok, maybe it’s not quite that good. But how many times have you had an important meeting with a client or friend scheduled, and you end up being late because you can’t find a parking space?

I’ve experienced this in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles, and of course, the city I live in, Atlanta. It can be very frustrating. If you are a native, you just know you have to leave extra early because you have no idea how long it will take to find a space. I’ve even seen some people become so upset about it that they just pull up on the curb and park anywhere. I suppose they calculate in their minds that the parking ticket or towing expense is worth it so they can get to their meeting on time.

Now there is an app, which at the moment is only available in a few locations (but that is changing fast), where you can get info on available parking spaces right on your iPhone! Apparently a similar app is already being used in France. It’s called the Parker app, and here in the States, it’s being launched in Hollywood first (one of the most congested parking neighborhoods).

The technology is made available through a company called Streetline. According to Fast Company, “They install low-power sensors in parking spots and parking meters that can give city officials comprehensive information (in map form) about available parking spots, occupied spots, and parking violations.” In other words, for $1.99, and depending on what city you live in, you may soon be able to get real-time parking information on your phone. That’s what I’m talkin about baby!! You can learn more about the Parker app here.
