The digital revolution is a major topic of discussion. In various articles, a strong emphasis is placed on the challenges, growth objectives and even survival strategies that can be seen in these great changes that emerge from technology. The shortage of professionals in the microservices development profession is one of the biggest causes of concern.
However, despite the growing interest in the subject, few offer solutions to a major problem: a shortage of engineers in 2019. The shortage is even worse in fields like microservices architecture development. But what does this mean? We simply won’t have people with the skills to develop microservices.
Those of us who have lived through digital transformation processes know the importance of microservices architecture developers in work teams. We realize that without their knowledge and experience, everything would be a simple illusion. A few people have proposed measures to alleviate this problem.
The solution probably begins with educating people about what microservices are and what competencies developers need. I hope this is being done, but I don’t know whether the results have been monitored. I investigated and it was not possible to find the results of this project, which is so important for our companies and their competitiveness.
On the other hand, what we experience every day suggests that the calculations of the number of new microservices architecture development professionals are not entirely accurate, as the current demand for ICT professionals seems to have surpassed the prediction made at that time. Finding microservices architecture developers has become a challenge. Indeed, many companies have chosen to train people with empirical or technical knowledge in order to strengthen human capital and develop high-impact technologies.
What are we going to do to draw more microservices developers to the field? This definitely affects the country’s competitiveness. Who is going to build our dreams of making digital transformation in companies and industries? One expert proposed a solution in 2014.
He revealed that at that time there were more than 15,000 jobs for engineers, but few professionals to fill them: “Let’s study engineering! Is $50 billion a year going to fix this problem? The jury is still out on that. But it could certainly go a long way.
My suggestion is that we think of technology – whether we are talking about specific fields like microservices architecture development for ecommerce or broader disciplines in technology – as the most important thing in business today, that we stop seeing it as an isolated area in companies, far from those who lead the business.
That we give priority as companies to form this human capital that is fundamental to play in the current market conditions and that we invest in them in different ways so that, without having to be professionals, we help them to develop digital capabilities that generate opportunities for growth in their lives.
But this cannot be possible without changing our paradigms or conceptions regarding not only technological but human resources. A research carried out during 2 years, in more than 400 big companies, called The Digital Advantage: How Digital Leaders Out-Perform Their Peers in Every Industry, shows conclusive data on the importance of digitally transforming our companies and points out what we are missing, and we will not be able to execute as we expect; due to the lack of vision, investment and dedication to training microservices architecture developers that we could generate from our own companies.
