If you are a regular reader of Bit Rebels, you know we write about Kickstarter projects often. It’s inspiring to learn about all the new technology and apps there. One thing we don’t often do though is follow those apps through their success. One such app, which we featured a month ago, has gone on to be very successful. The CamFind app, which is a mobile visual search app (geared towards product search), just launched this past Sunday on iTunes.
In just a few short days, it has moved up in the AppStore rankings to #64 for Utilities, and it’s on a steady incline. I’ve known about this product search app for a while, but when I watched the YouTube video about it today, I was blown away by all the features. It’s free, but in my opinion, they could easily charge for CamFind.
If you don’t know what a visual product search app does, let me explain. You simply use this app to take a picture of anything (yes, anything), and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about that product.
For example, if you take a picture of a movie poster, it will tell you what the movie is about, what theaters near you are playing it, what the movie reviews are, and show you more images referencing it. If you take a picture of a product you want to buy at the store, it will tell you all the places where you can get it. It’s also extremely accurate in giving the correct search and image results and fast in its image recognition. Like we wrote in the article a month ago, it’s basically like a real life search engine.
Product search apps are not new, but the thing that makes CamFind different is its simplicity and the features it includes. There is no typing required. You simply take a picture, and then you get your product search results. It’s as simple as that, and the interface is very intuitive. As far as the features go, well, there are a bunch of them.
CamFind’s Features:
Internet Search Results
Related/Similar ImagesPrice Comparisons and Online Shopping
Related Places and Address Finder
Film Poster/DVD Recognition
Social Sharing
Additional Functions:
Language Translator
QR and Barcode Reader
Text Search
Voice Search
Voiceover of Identified Objects
Automatic Flash
Automatic Focus
Ability to Save Images to the Camera Roll/Upload Images from Camera Roll
If you are in a different country, you simply take a picture of what you need, and CamFind will translate it into that language so you can speak it. If there was ever an app that could change search forever, and change how we interact with the world around us, it’s CamFind.
According to an article published yesterday on Cult of Mac and the day before on Mobility Tech Zone, CamFind is better than Google Goggles (the feature tacked onto the Google Search iOS app). And, according to an article on iPhone Life, CamFind is more effective than Siri for voice searches.
I don’t know how long CamFind will be free, but at the time I’m writing this, it still is. You can download it for yourself by clicking over to iTunes. If you decide to give it a shot, I hope you come back here to tell us what your experience was like when you did your first product search. Have fun!
