Website CMS Systems – WordPress Or Joomla?

When choosing a Content Management System for your website, it really comes down to which system you think is better suited to you and your site’s unique needs. Both WordPress and Joomla have been around for more than a decade, and both have been used to build amazing, high-functional, profitable websites. WordPress is definitely the household name of the two, but it is certainly not your only content management option to consider when building your site.

Choosing a CMS is an important part of creating your website, and you want to be sure you are going to be happy with something you are likely to be using for many years to come. If you can’t decide which system is right for you, below is a breakdown of what each has to offer, both in terms of what they lack, and what they excel at.

WordPress Is The Go-To Entry-Level Content Management System

WordPress is generally considered to be the most intuitive and straightforward content management system out there. This makes it especially popular among non-developers, and site owners/builders who want most, if not all of the back-end stuff taken care of for them. It is especially popular among first time site builders.

Joomla, on the other hand, offers more advanced user management. It gives you more control and more management features with which to tweak and design your site, but comes with more of a learning curve.

What Are You Doing With Your Site?

This is the essential question to ask yourself when deciding on a CMS: what is the purpose of your site? If the answer is blogging, then WordPress is the clear favourite. This is because WordPress provides you with a pre-packaged way to differentiate static posts and blog posts.

Joomla, however, does something slightly different, and the process of differentiating your content is a bit more involved. Joomla gives you one article type that you can then manipulate by applying different categories to it. You have to put some more time and effort into separating your content and your categories before you even start creating with Joomla.

WordPress vs Joomla Addons

WordPress is beloved for many reasons, but among the top is its constantly growing list of genius and highly convenient addons and plugins. These are features that would otherwise be impossible to create and add without any coding knowledge.

Joomla certainly comes with its own list of cool, and highly useful plugins and addons, but WordPress takes the cake in terms of sheer volume and variety. There are simply more options with WordPress.

Support And Expert Community

Another major consideration when choosing a CMS is ease of access to support and experts. Even with something as simple as WordPress, there is a learning curve. There will inevitably be questions you need to be answered, perhaps even certain processes you would like to pay for. WordPress, because of how old and widely used it is, has an enormous community of experts, and a nearly endless supply of high-quality information to help you along the way.

Joomla is no slouch in this category, and finding tutorials and information is easy, but it is more difficult to find experts for customized tasks. If you have something specific in mind and your preliminary research hasn’t turned up anyone who can do it for you in Joomla, you might want to opt for WordPress.

When it comes down to it, both are great systems that are used and beloved by millions of people all over the world, but WordPress is designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible. It is also the oldest and most used, so there are naturally going to be more experts around to help. Keep the above considerations in mind when choosing your CMS and ensure that your choice reflects both your capabilities and the nature of your site.
