Sandwich Bag Lunchbox Doodles From A Father With Love

For many kids, school is a boring way to spend 6 hours a day. They look forward to the weekend all week, and then they are met with Monday morning all too soon. I remember those days, and I remember how excited I was when my mother put a surprise in my lunchbox. Sometimes it was just a simple note or piece of candy, but whatever it was, it made the day brighter. The father I’m writing about today gives his children a surprise each day. He draws on their sandwich bags.

David LaFerriere has been drawing on his kids’ sandwich bags since 2008. He writes on each one with Sharpie markers. According to his flickr page, “Each drawing is done just after I make the sandwich. I take a picture and post it to flickr. My kids don’t see the drawing until it is lunchtime. The challenges are coming up with an idea and then drawing quickly and directly on the bag, every line counts.”

Wow, what a great dad! Since he’s been doing this every school day since 2008, there are over 1,000 of his sandwich bag doodles posted on flickr. He used to hide the sandwich bag behind their box of cereal in the morning while he drew on it, but now he lets them peek if they want to. They really enjoy getting the surprise from their dad, and their friends like it too.

I wonder if they keep the sandwich bags or if this is disposable art. At least there is a memory of each one on flickr. They will surely remember this as they get older, and especially when they start making sandwiches for their own children before school each day. You are probably wondering how much time he spends on these drawings. Apparently it takes about the same amount of time to do a quick doodle on the bag as it does to make the sandwich that goes inside. Wow, that’s some mad skills! Kudos!
