A Tribute To That Special Man In Our Life – Our Dad!

It’s Father’s Day again. I think the person who started the tradition loved her dad very much! I think it’s a great idea to have a special day for all fathers, wherever they may be. Fathers are special. They are our first teacher, first dance partner, first coach and our biggest fan.

According to Wikipedia, Father’s Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. It is also celebrated to honor and commemorate our forefathers. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities. The first observance of Father’s Day is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon at Spokane’s Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909 about the newly recognized Mother’s Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well. She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child when Sonora was 16 years old.

My dad passed away November 1998. I shared his role with my mom and this has made me a better and stronger person. He was not perfect, but no one really is. What was important was that he was there for us and cared for us. He taught us to love and to share. He gave us the biggest gift and that was education and the love for family. For those of you who have your fathers with you, call him and tell him how much he means to you. For those whose fathers are gone, honor him with your life and pause for a moment to think about the wonderful memories you had together when he was still with you. I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing two of my favorite pictures of my dad.

My dad always took my mom on dates. Here is one of their pictures. I’m not sure if I was the one or my brother was there in my mom’s tummy. She was 2 months pregnant here. (photo)
