Buying your first home is an exciting and sometimes also daunting experience. You can’t wait to have your own space, but you also realize the huge responsibility that comes with owning your own property. But aside from the serious stuff, owning your own home means you get to finally decorate and put your own stamp on somewhere!
Nothing makes a home feel more well, homely than being able to decorate it to your own taste and style. But you might be feeling a little apprehensive to get started if you’ve never tried any DIY before! But don’t panic, there are so many easy-to-learn DIY hacks that practically anyone can do around their home. DIY skills are incredibly easy to pick up, so without further ado here are some simple steps on how to improve your DIY skills.
Thanks to the power of the internet, and Youtube, in particular, you can learn practically any skill you want to know. Whether you just want some tips on preparing your walls for painting or want to learn something a bit more advanced such as tiling (get a pair of work gloves at the ready!). If you’re willing to put some time into watching and learning, there are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials out there.
If you’re not sure where to start, or what can be achieved by some simple DIY, then take a look on Instagram, Pinterest, and even TikTok. Check out some of the popular home decoration hashtags, including #DIYhomedecor #DIYdecor, #DIYideas, and #DIYprojects. This is a great way to understand exactly how much of a transformation you can realize, just with a few simple DIY tricks.
Most of your friends and family will have also self-taught themselves a certain amount of DIY skills, to improve their homes too. So don’t be afraid to ask friends, family, and even shop assistants in hardware stores for their advice and tips. They’ll be flattered that you asked, and only too happy to discuss their projects – including any failures and lessons they’ve learned along the way.
DIY is a huge learning curve, and unfortunately, things do and almost certainly will go wrong along the way. So be kind and patient to yourself while you’re still learning. Remember, there are no ‘mistakes’ only lessons – if something went wrong the first time, you’ll remember to try something different next time.
The best way to learn is often by doing. So sometimes you’ve got to go for it and get stuck in! Almost all DIY jobs are completely rescuable if anything does go wrong, so don’t panic. Just make sure you follow safety advice, wear PPE at all times and take it slowly. We advise starting small and seeing how confident you are with your DIY skills on some more simple projects first. Then you can build your way up to tackling some of your more adventurous ideas.
Most importantly – enjoy yourself! Decorating can be such a fun and rewarding project to spend your evenings or weekends doing. The sense of achievement that comes with realizing your abilities and seeing an end result that you’ve created completely by yourself is incredible. So try to enjoy and trust the process.
