There is a category of haunted attraction that people plan a weekend around. Not the one in the church parking lot, not the one at the mall. The ones where the license plates in the lot come from four states over and the October Saturdays sell out in September.
Here are ten of them, what each is actually known for, and when they open.

Field Of Screams, Mountville, Pennsylvania
Two brothers, one farm, thirty-four seasons.
Gene and Jim Schopf started Field of Screams in 1993 with a hayride through their own cornfield in Lancaster County and have added major attractions to it roughly once a decade since.
The Haunted Hayride is the gold standard for any haunted hayride in the US. The Den of Darkness went into a converted barn in 1995 and later landed on the Travel Channel as one of the scariest haunted houses in the world. Frightmare Asylum came in 2002, four floors of a fictional asylum with a dental wing nobody forgets. Nocturnal Wasteland, the trail through the woods, opened on Friday the 13th in September 2013.
All four still run. Each takes twenty to twenty-five minutes, which means the full Scream Pass is an evening, not an errand. New for 2026 is a scene inside the Den of Darkness called the Midnight Masquerade.
The 34th season opens Friday, September 11. Fridays and Saturdays in September, Fridays through Sundays in October with Thursdays added from October 15, then November 1, 6 and 7. Extreme Blackout runs November 13 and the Zombie Fun Run 5K follows on the 14th, with proceeds going to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.
The Scream Pass runs $40 on quiet nights and $60 on peak October Saturdays. Bring cash for the on-site booth or buy online with a card. Your attraction ticket also gets you the Entertainment Area, which has live music every operating night, food, games, axe throwing, and a beer garden for the over-21 crowd.
191 College Avenue, Mountville, right off the Route 30 exit. Ninety minutes from Philadelphia, ninety from Baltimore, which explains the plates.
One note, because it confuses people every year: several unrelated attractions around the country use the Field of Screams name. The one in Mountville has no connection to any of them.
Netherworld, Georgia
Netherworld is the one other haunt operators go to and take notes at. The reputation is built on what walks through the rooms rather than the rooms themselves. The costume, makeup and animatronic work is genuinely industry-leading, and people who follow haunting as a craft make the trip specifically for it.
The 13Th Gate, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Most haunted houses dress a hallway. The 13th Gate builds the place. It is the attraction most often named when operators talk about set construction, and the finished environments read closer to a theme park dark ride than a seasonal event.
Cutting Edge, Fort Worth, Texas
An abandoned meatpacking plant, over a century old, that they did not have to make scary. Cutting Edge has held Guinness recognition for the longest walkthrough haunted house. The building is the whole premise.
Erebus, Pontiac, Michigan
Erebus runs up and through several floors of a downtown parking structure and once held the Guinness record for the largest walkthrough haunt in the world. Being moved vertically through a real building does something to your sense of direction that a purpose-built maze cannot fake.
Headless Horseman, Ulster Park, New York
The Hudson Valley has the Sleepy Hollow legend and Headless Horseman uses every bit of it. A hayride plus several walkthroughs across a large property, and the strongest pick in the state for people who want atmosphere more than they want to be screamed at.
The Dent Schoolhouse, Cincinnati, Ohio
One building, one story, told well. Dent works a single premise inside a real former schoolhouse, and its janitor is one of the few genuinely original characters American haunting has produced.
13Th Floor, Denver, Colorado
Several themed houses under one admission, which makes it the efficient choice if you have one night and want volume. The Denver location anchors a group that now runs in multiple cities.
Reign Of Terror, Thousand Oaks, California
Proof that California haunting is not just theme park events. Reign of Terror is independently run and has grown room by room over many seasons into a sprawl of connected themed sections, built by people doing it because they want to.
Hellsgate, Lockport, Illinois
For 25 years the answer to this question in Illinois was Statesville Haunted Prison, built inside a farm building in Crest Hill by a farmer named Paul Siegel who got the idea because Blues Brothers fans kept pulling into his driveway asking for directions to the real Statesville Correctional Center. He closed it after the 2021 season.
The prisoners did not retire. Statesville’s cast and characters moved to HellsGate in Lockport, twenty minutes down the road, where they now share a property with the house staff. You reach the place by walking through the woods, which is the part people talk about on the ride home.
Before you go
Book the peak nights now. October Saturdays go early at every attraction on this list, and several have moved fully to timed-entry online ticketing with nothing left at the gate.
Check the weather policy. Indoor attractions generally run rain or shine. Hayrides and outdoor trails may not. At Field of Screams the Den of Darkness and Frightmare Asylum stay open in rain while the hayride and the trail can close in a real storm.
Carry cash. More than one long-running haunt still runs a cash-only booth.
Come on a Thursday or a Sunday. Cheaper, shorter lines, same show. And Halloween night itself is quieter at most of these places than the Saturday before it, which almost nobody believes until they try it.
Ten is usually the floor. Most of these attractions do not recommend admission for children under ten and do not refund anyone who walks out early. Several of the same operators run separate daytime family events instead. The Schopfs, for instance, run Corn Cob Acres on the same Lancaster County farm, fifty-odd activities and nothing frightening in any of them.
