9 Tips On How To Develop Your Blogging Style

Every blogger has their own unique style. None of them is better or worse – it depends more on taste and affinities. Indeed, there are bloggers you can’t stand to read and that many people adore. You even wonder how they can like something like that when you couldn’t even get past the first post.

Finding your style can be a challenge, especially when you’re just starting out. It’s about using a voice and a way of expressing yourself that is different from the rest but also one that you feel comfortable with and enjoy writing. Defining your style will make you more confident when working on your texts and will make them more credible.

How do you find your style? In this article, we will give you some tips that hopefully will help you if you are just starting out, if you have doubts about your writing style or if the one you use is not convincing.

1. Identify Your Way Of Self-Expression

Look at the way you usually express yourself in your blog: are you formal or informal, do you always use the same type of vocabulary, what kind of jargon do you tend to use, do you use parentheses, short or long sentences, do you write in passive, short or long paragraphs, etc.?

Picking up on these details will make you more aware of your particular writing style. You now have a basis on which to practice and improve. With time, you will only have to polish it, discard and get rid of bad habits, such as the indiscriminate use of the gerund or connectors, and many others. But don’t worry, that will come later.

2. Watch And Learn

Read other blogs, especially those you like the most. As well as giving you useful advice and inspiration for your writing, it can help you to improve your style. You may find a storytelling style that you like and suits you. Try emulating it and see what happens. Expressing yourself like the people you admire will help you become more confident and polish your writing. Just do it for a while until your writing and style become more established. Don’t copy forever, or you will never be you.

And never compare yourself to others. You can admire other bloggers but think that you are unique, that you have a way of telling stories like no one else, and that you will also evolve. Comparing yourself will only cause a block, and you will never be satisfied with the result.

3. Choose A Main Tense Of Your Storytelling

Start by choosing a tense in which you will tell the story. The most common tenses are present and past, especially the latter. Although, of course, it depends on your taste. Try to see which one you prefer, how you are best at telling things.

Of course, if you start with one, don’t jump to the other for no apparent reason. Try to stick to it and, above all, avoid the passive.

4. Try Writing Different Kinds Of Posts

Even the most successful blogs do not limit themselves to just one category of posts. Any successful blog consists of its author’s personal stories or thoughts, various interviews with other people, or other content types.  Why don’t you try doing the same?

For example, you could share your experience of the game you have completed recently or make a short Q&A session with your friend who has successfully launched a paper writer service startup. Anything your heart desires – just go ahead and try!

5. Mind Your Audience

You will have to adapt your writing to suit your readers. For example, you won’t use the same tone or themes if you’re writing for children as you do for adults. Set yourself some limits in this aspect and consider what you want to include and what you don’t.

Of course, write according to your preferences. Whatever you feel like and whatever makes you feel. Even if your blog’s topics may not be the trendiest, your passion for them will compensate for this fact and carve in your audience’s hearts.

6. Don’t Limit Yourself

There will come a time when you get tired of writing by imitation or thinking about how a particular blogger would explain something. That’s when your own voice will emerge. That’s when you have to let your imagination run wild and let yourself go.

Try telling things your way, and never limit yourself. If you want to deal with a subject, do it; if you want to express yourself in a certain way, do it too. It’s the only way to find what works for you and the only way to see what your audience likes. In addition, not all of your drafts will make it to the live post, so never be afraid to experiment.

7. Use Your Experience As A Source Of Stories

Often you don’t know what to write, especially when you start from scratch. If you lack the writing practice to develop exciting material, why don’t you try describing your thoughts and experience?

Your experiences and the way you tell them will bring out your voice because no one has lived those situations as you have. So, think how enthusiastically you can tell your friends about something good that happened to you.

Choose a situation from the past: you went to summer camp, when you got your driving license, ate with your friends in a restaurant, your first kiss, going to school or high school, your first crush, your first rejection, a fight with someone, skinny dipping in a lake, and so on.

Now, make the most of it with questions such as: what did I do, what did I feel, what did I learn? This will make it more realistic, and the reader will see it as more credible. At the same time, it will be easier for you to write.

8. Remember That You Are Just Starting Out

Write with the awareness that the first few posts are just a test, a learning curve. Writing is just like any other skill. Indeed, the first attempts of an expert at the piano, skating, or basketball were not perfect. But, with practice, you will improve and master that style until you make it your own, and you will find it much easier to write blog posts.

Don’t give up, and don’t expect to write the best articles right out of the gate. Even accept that your style may change and improve as you practice and learn. It is part of your natural evolution.

If you have to repeat a scene several times until you get what you want, if someone gives you a bad review or if you discover that something you thought was well thought out wasn’t, don’t get overwhelmed. You’ll get better. So never throw in the towel, follow the basics and keep writing.

9. Be Patient

Remember that finding your style and raising the skill may take some time. It’s not something that comes out of nowhere, as if by magic. Instead, it forms by experience and what you learn, and it sticks in your subconscious. There may come a time when something clicks in your head, and you feel the need to express yourself in your own way, but it will be because of all the work you have put in.

So, don’t despair and practice. None of the hours you’ve spent writing, whether it’s trying, researching, discarding, etc., have been wasted, even if it sometimes feels that way.
