The Rise Of Minecraft [Infographic]

I don’t think it is a secret anymore that I am a huge fan of the Minecraft game. It’s such a creative and versatile game in which you can do pretty much anything you put your mind to. You build, craft, adventure and do all kinds of cool stuff. The insane part is that a little bit over a year ago, Minecraft didn’t even exist. The Swedish indie game developer, Mojang, started out with just one guy coding the game Minecraft, and he calls himself Notch. Their office is only a stones-throw from where I am sitting right now writing this, and it’s incredible what that game has accomplished in a little over a year.

Today the game has been downloaded over 18 million times (source), and over 4 million people have bought the game for a beta price of $14.95. The game has just come out of beta, and now it costs $19.95 for anyone who wants to get in on the fun. This is one of those times when you baffle over the power of a word-of-mouth campaign. Notch, the creator of the game, has spent less than $95 on promotion of the game, yet it is one of the most celebrated games in history.

The history of Minecraft has been anything but boring, and even though the game has now come out of beta, content is still being added to it. Mojang (which in Swedish should be Mojäng and means “thing” or “apparatus”) now has a number of employees and has started to work on several new games to add to their lot. Visual.ly put together an infographic to showcase the history and timeline of Minecraft as a game, and it’s amazingly impressive. If you haven’t tried it out yet, I strongly urge you to get a copy since it is probably one of the most creative games you could ever play. Huge congrats on the success guys! There are millions of people who are looking forward to your upcoming games.
