Utah is one of two states the law of which prohibits nearly all gambling and casinos. Yet, the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law started innovative “Gambling & Gaming Law” class. Let’s have a closer look at why it was done and what are the results of the introduction of such a unique course.
Utah is one of two states the law of which prohibits nearly all gambling types and casinos so it was quite surprising when the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law announced the commencement of classes focused on gambling laws. For one semester, law students can learn about all peculiarities of the robust gambling industry in the college’s innovative “Gambling and Gaming Law” course. Essay writer of a decent writing company stated that students asked for help with this kind of topic.
William (“Bill”) Boyd, a chairman of Boyd Gaming Corporation and 1957 alumnus of the College of Law, approached Jennifer Roberts with an offer to teach “Gambling & Gaming Law” class under his sponsorship. As a 2002 College of Law alumna and the associate director of the UNLV International Center for Gaming Regulation and owner of Roberts Gaming Law, Roberts was definitely qualified and experienced enough to create a viable curriculum that covers the main aspects of gaming law.
Reportedly, there are 45 states with a lottery, 8 states with sports wagering, 40 states with casino gambling and 4 states with online gambling. Each state has its own legal regulations and issues. Typically, gaming is associated with table games or slot machines. However, there is more to it than that and quite a lot of opportunities are available in such area as a gambling and gaming law.
Think of private law companies, academia, government regulators, in-house attorneys with gaming companies, and more. According to Roberts, gaming law overlaps with many other types of law, such as business law (if you work with the corporation), maritime law (cruise ship or riverboat casinos) and administrative law (speaking on behalf of a client before legal regulators). Client disputes and damages on the territory of a physical casino also need to be regulated by the gambling and gaming law.
The important part of the course is visiting the gaming capital Las Vegas towards the end of the semester. The aim is to place the learners into the practical and real-world environment so that they could witness first-hand how the casino interacts with customers, what legal issues may take place and how to solve them by applying the theoretical knowledge that students received in the duration of the course.
The classes are not aimed at making students pursue a career in gambling law since the main idea is to provide a learner with the knowledge, which might be valuable for a future lawyer in general. A student can learn a lot from the courses like this even if he or she doesn’t plan to become a professional in this law field. One of the students who attended Robert’s course emphasized the networking aspect and the importance of connections which can be made in the process.
The unique course is one of the effective ways to attract talented future lawyers. Some students may be allured by the possibility of an exciting journey to Las Vegas but what is unquestionable is that thanks to the classes the learners will have a unique opportunity to receive in depth-knowledge, both theoretical and practical, which can be successfully used in their future law careers.
