InvaderCade: An iPad Enabled Home Arcade Cabinet

I know you guys love the retro stuff of the world, and so do we. It seems accessories are being developed more and more to give us that retro feel instead of totally going for the futuristic look that many people find a little bit hard to get familiar with. I think the biggest problem people have with adapting to new technologies is the gadget’s user interface and the way it’s laid out in general. For someone who has had a regular phone for pretty much their entire life (you know, one of those with buttons on it), switching to a touch-based phone can be a little bit intimidating. Even if the learning curve is not too steep, it’s still a hurdle they are many times a little anxious to take.

However, when technologies are backwards compatible, new technologies become quite a lot easier to pick up and therefore get an easier adaptation. I don’t know if that makes any sense at all, but it’s how technology works. There is a landslide of retro arcade accessories being released on the market, and it’s fun to see that so many of them use the iPad as their main engine. You simply slide that iPad into the arcade cabinet dock, and you are ready to start playing.

The InvaderCade from Taito is a great example of that, and it’s one of the coolest executions of an iPad accessory I have seen in a while. It’s a little bit bigger than the usual arcade cabinet docks, but that makes it even more fun. The price isn’t too hefty either. For just above $200, you will get this awesome chunk of technology (not including the iPad of course) which I am sure will rival even the most original real arcade gaming cabinet that will most likely sell for a couple thousand dollars, if you are lucky. Let the invasion begin! The retro of the past is back to haunt us for yet another day! If you ever played Space Invaders, do you remember what your high score was?
