SEO: Google’s Algorithm Changes [Infographic]

I know a lot of bloggers who hear the letters S-E-O, and they run the other direction as fast as possible. I read about SEO for years before I ever really understood what it was. If your blog is growing, and if you are interested in doing whatever you can to get new people to check out your articles, sooner or later you will have to make a decision about SEO.

At that point, you will have three choices. You can either hire someone to do it for you, you can avoid it altogether and pay for clicks (PPC), or you can learn it yourself. Richard and I decided to learn it ourselves, and now that it’s been a few years since we made that decision, I can tell you that SEO is intuitive and fun to me.

Here at Bit Rebels, we are constantly learning new things about it from trial-and-error. Thank goodness Richard is a statistics maniac so he tracks everything. When we make small SEO changes in our articles, he can tell very quickly what the effects of those changes are. We teach all of our guest writers SEO, and I think just about all of them would agree that it’s not hard at all. So if you’ve been procrastinating learning about it, I want to encourage you to jump right in! You can find many articles here on Bit Rebels about it, or you can just start with SEO For Dummies.

Google’s algorithm is a constantly changing beast, so SEO is not the kind of thing that you learn and then you know it forever. There are always little tweaks and changes to make that will enhance your efforts. This infographic below called Google’s Algorithm Changes tracks all of the changes from 1998 until now. Can you believe that Google makes changes to their search algorithm up to 600 times each year? Although some people might think that is too much, I think it’s a good thing. After all, that means they are constantly refining and enhancing their search engine which almost all of us use every day!

If you want to read another interesting tidbit about this, check out this article that I originally saw on Slashdot this morning, Google Is Planning To Penalize Overly Optimized Sites.
