The Intricate Anatomy Of A Web Designer [Infographic]

I have heard so many people talk about wanting to become web designers over the years that I have completely lost track of them all. It seems to be the common perception that working as a web designer is a free, simple and a rewarding profession. Well, I can tell you if that is what you believe, I will have to disappoint you. Being a web designer is not only stressful, but also quite annoying at times. You have to put up with people whining, constantly changing their opinions and ridiculous payment suggestions. On top of that, you have to work hard in order to gain exposure to new clients. As a web designer, you are as limited as the extent of your skills, and the life of a web designer is anything but easy.

Sure, at times it can be one of the most rewarding professions on earth (but then again, I think any profession is depending on who you talk to), but for the most part, it’s sluggish hours for little creative freedom in return. So what is the attitude of today’s web designers? Are they positive about what might come their way in the future, or are they a depressing group who regrets their decision of ever becoming a web designer in the first place?

We could possibly iron that out if we have a look at this steaming, fresh infographic called The Anatomy Of A Web Designer. It is presented to us by HeartInternet, and it is about a study that was recently undertaken. The people behind this infographic surveyed 500 web designers from around the world and then compiled the answers into this medical journal styled infographic.

Let’s take a look at some statistics, shall we? First of all, I am struck by the male and female representation in this profession. It is stated that 78% of the web designers included in this study are male. That’s a significant number that is hard to explain. Creative endeavors have always been kind of balanced when it comes to male and female representation. Furthermore, the largest percentage of web designers, 47% to be exact, are between 25-34 years old. There’s no huge surprise there, even though I know several people who are both older and younger than that, and they make up more than 50% of the web designers I know.

There are of course plenty of interesting statistics to delve into on this infographic, but when we look at how today’s web designers (or the ones included in this study) look at the future – 75% think it won’t get any easier to find work to support their businesses. As you see, being a web designer is not exactly a dance on roses. It’s quite the opposite really, judging from all these statistics. So, now I guess there are quite a few people out there who are thinking that becoming a web designer is a bad idea, right? Well, there is always room for innovation in any profession and business, so instead of looking at the negative aspects of the job, come up with positive ones that you can feed off of instead. That way, you can evolve and progress beyond the boundaries of an average web designer.
